Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

When my husband hung a smart TV in the sunroom back in April, we started spending more time in the room–even our teenage daughters started hanging out with us. So we started shopping around and were shocked to find how expensive outdoor furniture has become. The moral of this story is to always ask and always ask politely.

I’ve been an architect, day-care teacher to toddlers, and library clerk, but am currently a SAHM to a 14yo son and 9yo daughter. We rented at first, but the rental situation in our new town was poor. Nine years later, the rent for similar homes in our neighborhood is double the cost of our mortgage! Enjoying some outdoor time.

These are things that I never did before having our daughter, but I have so little time to rest and so in this season, if I can find things to save some time so I can get sleep, some rest, spend more time together as a family, or otherwise feel more restored, I’m doing that. Makeup, jewelry, a fancy car, the latest tech, tchotchkes 9.

Around the time our second daughter was born, I found myself so overwhelmed and distracted that I missed paying the rent for our business office. Tasks might be as simple as ‘reconciling’ or more complex like ‘paying the office payroll taxes’ and at that time, I definitely added ‘Pay Rent’ to that first list. Review Your Bills.

Our daughter is 24 and was adopted from Eastern Europe when she was one week short of a year old. He married the love of his life almost two years ago, so now we have a daughter-in-law, too. I still remember saving my change as a kid so I could “shop” for books at yard sales.) Our son is 29 and biological. Made me proud!
