What looked like a great idea on paper, was turning out to be very challenging. At my age, my parents had 20 years of kid-free living ahead of them to focus on their own career goals and to save for their retirement. Unfortunately things changed rather quickly. Our business is again thriving. We are communicating regularly.

We ran the numbers of the purchase and they looked great on paper, but paper doesn’t account for a new server, a roof leak, unexpected medical bills, and other calamities. A lot of life happened over 7 years and our plan changed slightly, but our goal remains to achieve complete freedom from debt. 2018 Update.

Let them see your excitement as your own accounts grow and get excited with them as their savings increase. Help them figure out what to save for and show them that you have goals for your own savings. Saving towards a goal and them fulfilling that goal is very satisfying to a child.

We sat down at our kitchen table, took out a simple white piece of paper, and penned out a contract to ourselves: It was our Get Out Debt Contract. We took that contract and we hung it up in our medicine cabinet as a daily reminder of our goals together. Our goal was simple: Pay Off Our Debt and Never Go Back Again.
