Years ago, there was a month where I hadn’t planned on a large property tax bill and I wasn’t sure where we were going to find the money. We were able to set aside the money over a course of 16 months and it felt amazing to walk into a store and have the cash for a purchase. This is a 12-month spreadsheet.

While we were still renting an apartment, I researched areas with lower property taxes, scouted out my ideal neighborhoods, and waited for a smaller, less expensive house to come on the market. When we lived in a bigger city, we had great resale stores for used clothing and toys. Childhood joy.

Home prices, property taxes and monthly rents vary from state to state, city to city, town to town and even neighborhood to neighborhood. Food: Weekly trips to the grocery store can add up, especially if food costs are high where you live. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest bill consumers pay each month is for housing.

Any housing related insurance fees and property taxes are also important to include. In fact, we prefer these products compared to what we can buy in the store. This would include your monthly mortgage payment or rent payment. Leave out cable television and satellite television. Also, remove DSL and cable modem expenses.

Pre-coronavirus, we didn’t think twice about shaking a stranger’s hand, using the ATM keypad, or going to the grocery store without donning a hazmat suit. I feel like going forward life will be known as Pre-Coronavirus and Post-Coronavirus , kind of like what happened after 9/11. Fortunately, we won’t be driving much.

These will include things such as insurance, property taxes, gasoline (to get to the lake and to boat on the lake), maintenance, boat slip fees and storage fees in off season. One boat owner estimated that you should expect to pay 3 times what you think you will to include these ‘hidden’ costs.
