We knew that we would at least partially combine our finances when we were officially married, but when we were making our combined budget before going to the bank and officially combining, we hit a bit of a road block when we realized that we have a huge disparity in our financial goals. No, we can’t get you that splendid new electronic toy your friends have. Take them to the bank and let them see you make your deposits. Buy them a piggy bank and help them remember to feed it when they can. Help them figure out what to save for and show them that you have goals for your own savings.

We lived off my salary and banked Alan’s even before we were married so that we could build our own house (literally), paying cash as we went. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears were shed here, but we both agree that having no mortgage gave us a serious leg up on our retirement savings and other financial goals. It happens all the time.)

Both are now old enough to open a bank savings account. I would go into the bank with my stubby little hands clutching my months worth of allowance (total of $1), deposit it and see the results right off printed in my book. Most of the time, the best we can expect from bank savings accounts has been from 2% to 5% before inflation.
