How Our Debt Freedom Plan Prepared Us for the Pandemic. And I was pregnant with our youngest daughter, so what should have been a joyous year was quite a stressful one. We’d survived the dip in 2007, carried no credit card debt, and we were contributing to our retirement. This new business debt weighed on me.

Why are we jumping through these hoops to be debt free? WHY do we want to be debt free? When we wrote our Debt Freedom Plan , I posted it on the refrigerator as a daily reminder for the two of us. But my oldest daughter immediately zeroed in on #5: Cash flow a trip to Disney. ”, “What does debt freedom mean?”

That was the year that we made the goal of paying off the last of our non-mortgage debts and we achieved it by September of that year. …enter 2023 We have not one, but two teenage high school daughters. We want to assist our daughters with their college expenses. We have a number that we want to save for each daughter.

I have used the extra money to pay off debt, fund family trips, or build up our Christmas savings. This trip was a reward for our years of paying off six figures of debt , and we were going to pack a lot into our week. My daughter outgrew the set and we put the money towards a new set for her. Whew, got all of that!

At the time, I wasn’t sure how we were going to pay our monthly bills, so future plans like funding our retirement , our daughters’ college education, or a lavish vacation were not on my mind. But once I created our debt freedom plan and outlined the steps we would take to wade through the hardships, I was overcome with relief.

However a few years ago, we found ourselves with too much debt and not enough cash. Within a year after settlement, we found ourselves with a lot of debt, not enough cash flow, and very little set aside for emergencies. We had our daughters later in life and at a crucial time in our lives, I stopped our retirement contribution.
