Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

If you get tempted to purchase an extra item upon reaching the store, do not purchase it right away. Eating out harms you in two ways. It is always costlier than eating at home, and it makes you fat, no matter whether you are buying a quick snack at a fast food restaurant, vending machine or a convenience store.

Rent instead of own. If you calculate your mortgage interest, the cost of insurance and maintenance, buying can be much more expensive than renting. And if you rent, save money and then invest the difference. Shop around at garage sales, thrift stores and online classifieds for furniture and other household items.

For example, non-organic Swanson broth is almost three dollars at most grocery stores. Since then, he’s found a new bait store where minnows are cheaper and is using more artificial bait. Shop at liquidation closeout stores. Here in Nashville, the most popular closeout store is Bargain Hunt. Find free events.

Limit eating out and the activities that are outside your budget such as expensive movies and far away vacations. You can rent a movie, turn-off the lights, grab a bowl of popcorn, and enjoy it with the family. Patronize stores and establishments that sell cheap and quality items.
