Dave Ramsey has a plan and it has worked for millions of people. We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1.

We live in metro Phoenix, in a 70s tract house that we’ve been gradually re-doing. About $52,000 of that $147K was consumer debt (credit cards, a student loan, a car loan, a home improvement loan, etc.) From start to finish it took us a very long time — I would guess 10 years.
