Our main financial goal is to pay off our last non-mortgage loan. It was a goal in 2018, but high medical bills and other financial challenges hindered our progress. However, I made it through the ice cream aisle yesterday at GIANT with nothing falling into my cart. My word for 2019 is REDUCE.

But we have some serious financial goals to hit and the grocery budget is an easy target when it comes to cutting the budget. Every week I buy at least one bag of pretzels and/or a bag of tortilla chips and you’ll see below in the pictures that I bought ice cream and Oreos and Cheeze-It’s–all on separate occasions.

So often, we don’t dream about our financial goals, because we are so entrenched in our challenges. You’ll want to scream and hide under your bed, or in my case, eat cartons of ice cream. Next, make a list of your current needs , such as home repairs, medical needs, or educational needs. Prioritize.

A lot of blood, sweat, and tears were shed here, but we both agree that having no mortgage gave us a serious leg up on our retirement savings and other financial goals. We were somewhere on vacation with the kids when they were young, and Alan and I had promised them ice cream. Don’t forget, this was 20 years ago.)

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. In fact, there would be entire weekends that we ate at a restaurant for every single meal–breakfasts, lunch, and dinner…AND ice cream cones for dessert! But at one time, we ate out quite a bit.
