Increase Your Income If you are going to learn how to save extra money for a car, you might as well teach yourself how to earn more money for the expense. You are going to need gas, car insurance, and money for car maintenance and repair costs. Setting up an automatic savings account system works wonders for me.

In the same week, I woke up one morning to an icy cold shower and the discovery that our hot water heater was broken beyond repair. Create a separate savings account and call it your Emergency Fund. Be diligent about how you use this account. A few years ago, our van needed four new tires to pass inspection.

I had amassed $70 and thought it was a perfect addition to our Christmas account. In April, we received a small tax refund and I put $100 of our refund into our Christmas Savings account. In May, I made money from a yard sale and put $50 towards our Christmas savings. It was a pretty easy month to find the cash.

When you are young and many years from considering retirement (and not earning much), it’s tough to save money. Aim to save about a year of your basic living expenses in a simple savings account (no risky investments here). That’s what emergency savings are for. Live simply. In 2011, life seems pretty complicated.
