We also didn’t feel comfortable with Dave’s suggestion of a $1000 starter emergency fund, which is his step #1. The point of the starter emergency fund is to get you through until you pay off your non-mortgage debts, at which point, you build a more extensive fund. DONE November 2019.

Advantages of Paying Off Debt From a purely financial point of view, it makes more sense to focus on debt payoff rather than directing available cash to a savings account. From a personal point of view, I much prefer living debt free. You will need to handle them first, even if your emergency fund is nonexistent.

It is vital to your future success and security that you don’t blow it at this point. Another important aspect of your budget should be an emergency fund. Research has shown that most people these days only have enough funds to maintain their current lifestyle for about 30 days if they were unable to work.

I have written often about the importance of an emergency fund. We have an emergency fund, but after this crisis, we will likely need to replenish it and increase the amount that we keep. My second prayer is that my family gets through this crisis financially. Being self-employed, we need the security that it offers.

My son knows that there are two meeting points out (depending on whether he leaves out the front or out the back) in our neighborhood. If your emergency is strictly financial (and even if it has a physical component to it), you should be ready with a liquid emergency fund.

I also opened another Capital One 360 account for our emergency fund that was also sitting in a zero-interest savings account. 6 – Gas points – 60 cents off gas! I took advantage of the June gift card promotion at GIANT and bought four $25 gift cards and earned 6 times the gas points.

Once you have a goal in mind, you need a roadmap for how you’re going to get from point A, where you are now, to point B, your goal. The important thing is to get started; any major goal that inspires you to do that is a good start. Put a System in Place. Another word for that roadmap is a budget.
